Let’s meet the next Hall of Fame Inductee, Margaret W. Coffin ’08- @bateswsoc, @bates_wbb, and @bateswlacrosse.

In an era of specialization, Meg Coffin ’08 was a rare three-sport star at Bates.

A dominant force on the soccer field, Coffin earned NEWISA All-New England honors as a first-year defender—an uncommon feat. As a sophomore, she broke out with four goals, multiple All-Region awards, and Team MVP honors. Her junior year, she anchored the defense as Bates captured its first NESCAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA second round. Coffin added six goals and collected a full slate of postseason awards, including NSCAA All-America Second Team.

That same year, she excelled in basketball, earning NESCAC Player of the Year and becoming just the second woman in Bates history to receive All-America honors in two sports. Even after a knee injury limited her senior soccer season, she still earned NSCAA All-America Third Team and a fourth straight NEWISA nod. “She’s the total package,” said coach Jim Murphy.

On the court, Coffin started as a rookie on a 19-8 team, then thrived next to All-American Olivia Zurek ’05 during a 25-3 campaign that saw Bates ranked No. 1 nationally. As a sophomore, she averaged 12.3 points and 7.6 rebounds. With Zurek gone in 2005-06, Coffin dominated: 17.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, .592 FG%, plus team highs in blocks and steals. She was named NESCAC Player of the Year and earned WBCA and D3Hoops.com All-America honors.

After sitting out 2006-07, Coffin returned to average 15.3 points and 9.4 rebounds her final year, earning All-NESCAC First Team and another All-America honor. She graduated fourth all-time in both scoring (1,252) and rebounding (789).

She also earned All-Region honors in lacrosse. “My attitude is, ‘I’m going to shut you down,’” Coffin told Bates Magazine.

Bates College is proud to announce the appointment of Ian Gould as Director of Women’s Golf, effective July 14!

The Portland Press Herald Golf Coach of the Year joins the Bobcats following a remarkable run as head coach of the Gardiner High School golf team, where he led the Tigers to the 2024 Maine Class B State Championship — their first in 60 years.

“Ian brings a powerful blend of coaching acumen, championship experience, and a values-driven approach that aligns beautifully with the mission of Bates Athletics,” said Interim Director of Athletics Will Rothermel. “His leadership helped create a transformative moment for his Gardiner team, and we are confident he will have a similar impact with our student-athletes on and off the course.”

“I’m honored and excited to join the Bates community,” said Gould. “Bates is a place where excellence, inclusion, and integrity are woven into everything. I’m eager to help our student-athletes grow as players and people, and to build a program that reflects the values of this incredible institution.”

A lifelong Mainer and a University of Southern Maine graduate, Gould has also dedicated much of his career to social work, mental health, and youth mentorship. His holistic coaching philosophy emphasizes resilience, growth, and confidence — qualities that mirror Bates’ commitment to student development.
