Kokomo's Kats for a Cure Complete Season

The Kats For a Cure Track-and-Field Club concluded its indoor club season recently at Indiana Wesleyan University’s Midwest Indoor Classic. The Club – consisting of Kokomo-Center Township Schools students – won three places at the open collegiate invitational.

The 800-meter-relay team of Kokomo High School senior Brianna Lancaster, KHS sophomore, Deju Miller, KHS junior Jania Eddington, and Central Junior High sixth-grader Tionna Brown ran a season best, 1:53.21 finishing 4th. According to MileSplitIndiana.com, this is the second-fastest time in the state so far this season. Miller and KHS freshman Lana Pham tied for 4th in the high jump with 5’1” efforts.

This was the second time this season the Club placed in three events at an IWU invitational: On Jan. 28, Miller tied for 3rd in the high jump; KHS senior Summer Blackamore was second in the shot and the Club’s 800-relay finished second.

However, at the MIC, it was the 200-meter dash that pleased the Club’s coaches the most: Although no one obtained national-indoor-meet-qualifying marks, the Club entered seven student-athletes and six received personal records and one received a season best.

“One of our goals for this meet was to have fun and get PR’s,” said Club Coach K.O. Jackson. “Summer has already qualified to the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation’s New Balance Indoor Nationals and the University of Kentucky Invitational but we wanted to get PR’s and qualifying marks so she would have company at those two prestigious meets; nobody wants to compete at championship meets alone.

“Although we didn’t get any other national qualifiers, we had a good club season and I am proud of the ladies’ efforts. We are sad to see the end of Brianna (Lancaster), Anh (Pham) and Summer’s Club careers with us. We’ve been competiting against mostly collegiate competition this season, but now it’s back to high-school indoor track competition. Our fast, relax, pretty, smooove show begins March 7 when we begin the Hossier State Relays’ season.  We are working hard to put on a show.”
