No. 14 Badgers to start NCAA competition with 19 athletes May 22, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 14-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team will be well represented in next week's 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Round, as the Badgers will send 19 athletes looking to punch their tickets to the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Joe Piane (pea-AH-nee) -- a two-time national cross country coach of the year, tutor of 189 Irish All-Americans and a longtime fixture on the University of Notre Dame campus as head coach of the Irish men's cross country and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs -- has announced his retirement after 39 seasons in those roles.

Four Spartans won Big Ten medals on the second day of competition at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday at Purdue University. Leah O'Connor (3,000m steeplechase), Kurt Schneider (decathlon), Antonio James (discus) and Tim Canfield (pole vault) each earned a spot on the podium to boost Michigan State into fifth place on the men's side with 23 points and eighth on the women's side with 16 points.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Thanks to nine first-place performances, the No. 18-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team edged past Missouri, 92-90, to win Saturday's Tom Botts Invitational dual meet.Babatunde Awosika notched a pair of victories by setting personal records in the 200 and 400 meters. The senior started his day by winning the 200 in 21.44 seconds, a career-best time and the fastest by a UW athlete this season. Awosika then followed up that performance with a first-place effort in the 400 in 47.16, Wisconsin's top time of the outdoor campaign.

On the final day to post times that can be considered for selection to the national championships Villanova posted a time of 9:28.06 in the distance medley relay and leaped to third in the nation on the season performance list. The lineup of junior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.), senior Chris FitzSimons (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) competed in the Boston University Last Chance Meet at the Track & Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon and the Wildcats also had individual entries in the Mile and the 800 meters. Sophomore Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) posted a time of 3:59.52 in the Mile to notch the third sub-four minute time of his career and the second this season.

Setting two new conference records, four MSU records and adding three medals, the Michigan State track & field team concluded competition at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday. Tori Franklin (triple jump) and Leah O'Connor (mile) each won Big Ten titles en route to earning a spot in the conference record books, while Kurt Schneider (heptathlon) and Caleb Rhynard (5,000-meter) broke decade-old school records to close out the meet. At the end of competition, the Spartan women finished seventh overall with a total of 50 points, while the men tallied 51 points for an eighth-place finish.
