On Sunday, baseball players, coaches, umpires and fans from around the world honored legendary slugger Jackie Robinson, by wearing his jersey number, 42. Yesterday (April 15) was the 65th anniversary from the day Robinson became the first African-American baseball player to take the field as a major leaguer. A 1962 Hall Famer, Robinson, spent his entire career with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-1956). He was a 6x All-Star selection, a MLB Rookie of the Year (1947), a NL MVP (1949), and a 1955 World Series Champion. Prior to his MLB career, he starred in four sports for the UCLA Bruins, competing in baseball, basketball, football and track and field. Robinson became the first athlete in Bruin history to letter in four different sports. In 1940, he won the NCAA outdoor title in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 10.5 inches. Happy Belated Jackie Robinson Day!
